The Non Farmers Do It Again!

Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! ::Skippyhappydance::

I wish you guys were here Tadpoles. I do.
Wallene and I are dancing around the house like idiots because we have managed to grow this:
 WATERMELONS!!!!
and SQUASHII!!!!
I know it seems like a totally stupid thing to be excited about, but folks we are as far from gardeners as you could get.  It is the little things I am a telling ya'. The little things that are going to turn into great BIG HONKER WATERMELONS! Yippppppppeeee!

We picked our peppers and tomatoes when we returned from vacation so Squirrel could make salsa [still waiting here, darling child, ahem.] But when Wallene went out to the back yard and found these goodies?  We scared the neighbor's kids by screaming, we were so excited. [That is not hyperbole btw - we actually did have the poor kids running to our aid. OOPS.]

I expect all of you that want to grow fresh veggies to jump on the band wagon with us next year, hear me?  You have absolutely NO excuses :D.  We are black thumbed, townhouse dwelling, decked growing fools now Tadpoles.  As I said before if we can do it - ANYONE can.

And all you prolific growers [looking at you ellen and sci fi chick] you can stop laughing at me any time. giggle  I know it is a drop in the bucket to some of the gorgeous gardens I see y'all grow, but it's a start and I'll take it.

It's the little things Tadpoles.  Mmm Hmmmmm. The little things.

I need to finish up dinner now.  On tonight's menu - Pulled Chicken made in the crockpot [it smells sooo good in here] on homemade potato rolls, with coleslaw, mac & cheese - and for dessert? Lemon icebox pie.

Life?  Is good.  See ya' on the flipside!

I planted watermelons but they just didn't grow. One or two of the puny vines put on two fruits that never got bigger than a tennis ball. didn't even get that big. one day I went out and they had split. never buying any seeds from them again. the cantaloupe seeds I bought from them hardly grew and made 0 fruit and I asked for pole beans and they gave me bush beans instead. however, the cantaloupe seeds my neighbor gave me have been doing great but this week and a half of rain has just about ruined them. the first two to come ripe, one had split on the bottom, the other was not so sweet. they like it hot and dry.

I'm glad your garden is working! I'm coming for dinner! (I wish) I never get out to garden early enough in the spring to get things growing - too busy on the phone trying to drum up business.

That's why God invented grocery stores. And farmer's markets (we have a couple good ones close by - my daughter shops every week at one of them)

I really do want to come for dinner. :(

I am right in line behind Jeannie to come to your house to eat!

Gypsy - you and Lady just take a detour through Canada, pick up Jeannie and we'll be all ready for you three. Sound good? Y'all are always welcome. :)

Although I made a tasty dinner (very veggie spaghetti sauce with some healthier noodles), your dinner sounds very tasty, too.

I have never tried to grow watermelons, mainly because I have a small growing area and I know how they like to just go wild! However, I'm having a bumper crop in my garden this year... sooo many cucumbers, and tomatoes. We've already gotten three zucchini (I only planted one plant!) and there are several more that are just weee little zuc's yet. Even my onions are doing well!

Good for you! Gonna have to get yourself a pair of bib overalls and a straw hat now, ya know. Dat's the rule.

I'm so happy for you! I can't wait to see what you do next year. Check your local growing zone and see when you can start some lettuce. Some of it grows real well as a fall crop. You can grow it in containers too. Yummmm.... I know you guys love salad and once you taste some homegrown lettuce it will completely spoil you to store bought stuff.

I forgot to tell you that I've got a link over at my place for growing zones. Check under the gardening tab. You can still grow some more stuff for this fall if you really want to. Check your local Agg Extension Agency site (It's there too) to see what all you can do. Its probably about time for starting the fall garden.

You're awesome SFC. Thanks. I will definitely check it out. We get swiss chard from my in laws, but lettuce would be knew. YUM. :) I appreciate the ideas.

Very proud of you, even if watermelon makes me gag. (Any melon has the same effect, ESPECIALLY cantalope. My Dad would buy one and put it in the fridge. I would find it and take it out to the garage fridge.

First of all o top master chef, that dinner sounds just scrummy!! Wow! Look at the size of those watermelons, and growing squash too. I can imagine just how excited you must be! You've obviously got a good climate going on there for all these veggies! I wish I was there as well! Hugs.

I think I would be planning on making some squash ravioli in a brown butter sauce with plain old watermelon for dessert.

I planted a pumpkin, but I didn't take care of it, so it hasn't come up. I am the queen of the black thumb.
