I Believe It. . .Doesn't Make It Any Less Stupid

A new study out today shows that Americans, on average, spend more on coffee and lunch during the year than they do on commuting to/from work.

Over half of the respondents spent over $1,000 per year on coffee and two thirds spent over $2,000 on lunch while working.

I have always known Starbucks and other coffee shops to be very expensive for what they sell.  I think $5 for a coffee is just ridiculous when you can  make better coffee at home for a fifth of the price [takes less time too]. But  I was shocked, having not eaten fast food in so long, just how expensive that has become.  We took Squirrel back to school last week and stopped at Wendy's to grab lunch. WOW.  We ordered 4 #1s - which is 4 hamburgers [no cheese], 4 sodas and 4 french fries.  The total was $24! And that is the smallest "meal" they have on the menu.  So, combining the coffee and the lunch [for one] that is $55 per week.  Don't these people realize how well one person can eat on that amount, per week?  Multiply $55 by a family of 4 and you have a $220 per week to budget for groceries and home brewed coffee.

That is a pretty nice budget folks.

I hope that the people that are complaining that they are broke or that all their money problems are due to the current administration see themselves in this survey and realize that they are throwing their money away.  Buy a thermal coffee mug, some fancy creamer and pack the leftovers from last night's dinner.

Then you can fairly gripe that you have no money.

have to kind of agree on this one dear. the chains are very overrated. I am a coffee snob myself and brew my own from freshly gound beans which sounds expensive, but you made me feel better because it's still not as expensive as Starbucks! and tastes WAY better!!

I've never understood going out to lunch when at work. I always take my lunch and even though I'm buying my frozen packaged meals, I'm only spending $10/week for lunch. Guess I'm lucky that I've never liked the taste of coffee so I don't have to worry about that one.

Every time you hear some expert talk about how to save money they always say stop going out to lunch. But if you already don't do that they never have another suggestion.

I work in a hospital, so it's very easy for me to go to the cafeteria. That can add up. Then the hubs was going out to places by his work. We had to nip that one in the bud too. We now take leftovers or a sandwich.

Well said. I always make my own soup and have enough for four portions and take this to work in a thermos. Plenty of people I work with spend stupid amounts of money on sandwiches and takeaways yet they take the piss out of ME! Cheeky sods.

I stopped eating fast food a long time ago, though I'm still a sucker for Wendy's chili. I still think it Iis fairly inexpensive. Mostly I eat at home and only stop for a coffee on the road if I'm having a busy work night and need a pick me up.

I had a colleague who stopped at SB and bought herself 2 venti lattes every single day and then cried she was both broke and overweight. $10 a day for 2 "coffees"? No wonder there where the problem was.

well said! i never, ever buy my lunch out (have always brought from home) and it's a rare treat to have fancy coffee out (usually it's mcdonald's $1 cup) but every once in a while i will let myself splurge. i do have a keurig but i also use regular coffee grounds in a filter basket. bought some wonderful gevalia coffee the other day to use in it. delish!

i even quit buying the frozen lean cuisine meals because although convenient, they aren't really as good as leftovers. if i don't have anything "leftover" to bring, it's soup or a sandwich for me.

when you're already making these cutbacks and still broke - yeah, then you can complain about the state of affairs (but it's probably still got a lot to do with your other spending - boy howdy, do i know this one from experience!)

I couldn't agree more. Back when (you need the way back machine for this) I worked downtown I took my lunch because between parking and eating out, I had no extra cash after bills. $5 for coffee!? I have never ever bought a Starbucks coffee. I mean, it says it right in the name...StarBUCKS.

That's so true. When my husband eats fast food for lunch he spends a fortune so I make his lunch and then if he gets bored with a bagged lunch he'll do fast food once a week for a little variety. When I take the little guy to Wendy's we can get out of there for around $7 because he and I just each have a jr. cheeseburger deluxe, which is on the $1 menu. Then I get him some apple slices on the side - also $1, and wild berry iced tea, which we share because their small size is ginormous! And I usually also get us a side of nuggets. No fries because I'm just not real fond of them and no point in stuffing my four years olds face with them when he doesn't seem to care one way or the other. So, with tax it's between six and seven bucks and we're both full. We can only do that about once a week, though, because even seven buckaroos would add up quickly if we did it too often.

You have to be kind of "smart" these days, to not spend more than you have to. I always bring my lunch from home, and have it at the office then I go out for a nice walk around the park nearby. We don't have a canteen at work, so we either have to go out for lunch or bring our own.

If/when I'm forced to go to Wendy's because the husband wants it for everyone, it costs roughly $30. It's stupid and I'm tired of it. FEEL MY FURY!!!!

I've agreed with you on this for at least 20 years. I didn't need a survey to tell me that eating a fast food lunch and buying takeout coffee isn't cheap. But people these days don't seem to even consider the idea of taking a lunch.

Oh - I wanted to say also - that even buying a frozen meal to warm up in the microwave at work is a lot cheaper than takeout. If making lunches isn't your thing or you have no leftovers.

I can't believe that people spend THAT much on coffee & lunch over a year's period. Some people must have more money than sense, I say!! Oh! Well said my friend.
