Glad I Started My Boycott Early

It is no secret that I was none too happy with Best Buy, Target, Toys R Us and Kohl's when they decided to open on Thanksgiving day this year.  I did not like that they were forcing their employees to work on a holiday that, in my opinion, they shouldn't have to.

All for the almighty dollar.

In previous years we would avoid the mall and go to those stores to shop.  It was easier and we knew that, in some instances, we could find better deals.

Not this year.  I made it perfectly clear that I was not shopping at any of those retailers because I did not like their business practices. [In fairness I haven't been in a Toys R Us in 10 years since they were convicted of price fixing.]  And I didn't.  I bought every single gift for our family members [online and at the mall] without once turning to our old standbys.  I could have bought something from each of them too.

Thank goodness I didn't, because one of our big online purchases would have been from Best Buy.  Instead I went with another retailer and received the gift within 5 days.

Turns out it may not have been the case with Best Buy.  Have you all read/heard that Best Buy has been sending out notifications in the last 24 hours to their customers informing them that their orders HAVE BEEN CANCELLED?

Yes!  Customers that ordered as far back as Cyber Monday [November 28] have been told that they will not be receiving their purchases 3 days before Christmas!!!!!!!

That is ridiculous Tadpoles.  And yet another reason I will never shop at Best Buy again.

I hope that none of you had the misfortune of dealing with them this holiday season and weren't caught short handed a few days before Christmas - but if so, I know that everyone will be understanding.

BAH HUMBUG Best Buy.

Wow! I'm in the market for a new tv and I was thinking of looking online for a good deal since it's so close to Christmas but I will not be ordering through Best Buy now for sure. That is super crummy!

I understand your boycotts and have some of my own, but it gets hard to buy American, shop locally, get a good deal (price) and meet my personal criteria (boycotts). Not just for gifts but for necessities that need to be restocked or appliances that need replacing.

My long awaited purchases finally arrived on Monday. The post office was to blame. How do you fight them?

A lot of companies are making promises they just can't keep.

I'm happy for you that you got your gifts. I'm pretty sure Best Buy was not open on Thanksgiving here. Probably quite pointless as it is far earlier than yours and not the kick-off for Christmas shopping. I did buy a gift card at Best Buy though. My boys buy a lot of electronics and Best Buy is usually the best place to get it around here - the kind they expect anyway. I have rarely shopped at Toys R Us. We don't have Target or Kohl's.
I think retailers have to pay a significant fine to be open on a holiday here. It's worth it for the big guns. Not everyone is Christian. Not all Christians care about arbitrary days. I believe that employees can refuse to work holiday shifts here but few would - because they have to be paid time and a half plus get a paid day off or a day's pay in lieu of the day off if they don't wish to take one. (Essentially double time and a half)

When I had the salon, there were always customers who would gripe that we were closed on holidays. So it's not just that retailers want the bucks but that customers want them open regardless. They are meeting a "need".

In theory, it would be nice if everyone enjoyed celebrating holidays, but they don't. Or can't because they are far from family.

It is somewhat satisfying that the giants have become victims of their own marketing - unable to supply the demand they created. The shortfall will go to their competition, who will likely snag a percentage of the population for future purchases due to better service or other benefits.

Hi Skippy. That is absolutely terrible that some people might not be getting their Christmas gifts, when they ordered them so early. I admire you so much my friend for taking this stand against Retailers. If we all did this, then we might change things for the better. Warmest wishes to all your little family my friend x

Good for you that you've got your presents sorted :) I am not a big fan of running around at the mall. For us it's like getting in there and out quick [lol]. Have started to buy stuff online more though, it's so convenient and I love bargains. Have a fantastic Christmas my friend! Hugs x

My one purchase from Best Buy arrived without problem. In fact all of my online purchases have arrived, even something I bought last week.

Merry Christmas and enjoy the holiday.

That's crazy! I only bought two gifts this year for Hannah - one is a new cell phone and the other was a smoothie maker - both bought right next door to each other!

It's weird, I don't know what to do with my time - Tony still isn't eating anything but bananas, applesauce and bread - I think this is the least bizzy I've been in my kitchen the weekend of Christmas! :(

Hugs to you!

didn't buy any electronic items this year (haven't in several years, in fact) but i dont like best buy anyway. their return policy SUCKS. i'm boycotting target anyway because of their treatment of nursing mothers in some of their stores. don't like their customer service, either.

i do like kohl's but haven't shopped there in quite a while.

We bought a big screen TV for the menfolk to enjoy in the newly remodeled basement. I was going to get it online, but so glad I went to Costco instead.

This news from Best Buy must be a big hit for them financially. It'll take a long time to recover from this awful press.

Yeah. I have to say, I did do some online shopping, but in the end, anything I really needed was purchased in a brick and mortar store.

Merry Christmas Skippy!
