Resolutions, Smezsolutions

Courtesy of Mr. Bill Waterston
I know the New Year brings about the desire for a fresh start. People everywhere seem to pin their hopes, dreams and betterment on the dawn of January 1st.

I have never understood this.

Here's my thinking -

What about  the month of March?  That isn't a worthy enough month to use as a time to change your [insert bad habit, addiction, penchant for serial killing] ::here::?

You can't stop biting your nails ::waving:: in June or start being a nicer person in August? Why?

What is the problem with February? Do you have to hold out until the New Year to become more organized so you have a good 10 months to live in a disorganized chaos?

There is no magic to January first.  You can find any day of any year to correct what you think is lacking in your life.  A calendar should not dictate behavior.

Next weekend won't do?  Try a random weekend.  It works.  Trust me.

I know it isn't all sparkly like January 1st - but anytime is good time to start anything that is going improve what you feel you need "fix", right?

See what I mean?

Why do we need a specific date to be healthier, stronger, better because someone, somewhere coined the phrase "New Year's Resolutions."  It makes no sense.

Anyway  I write this because I have been asked what my New Year's resolutions are.

I was happy to make it to 2011 - I guess I resolve to make it 2012 - but I didn't have the time to wait until January 1st to see that.  It started quite a few weekends ago for me.

Besides, I have to admit,  I wanted to get dressed in day clothes everyday in this New Year and here I sit on the 2nd, at 6 pm, in my pajamas.

Yep, I don't do resolutions.  They screw up my "perfectness". hee.

  2. Don't do them either. I have goals but they are ever changing and usually achievable.

    is it really 2011?

i am perfectly happy being who i am...why change when it is so much work and arbitrary days to make change are foolish...

  4. It doesn't matter what time of day you get out of your jammies, just so long as you do (even if it's only to change into another pair). That's my motto. And just so ya know, you weren't alone in your choice of attire at 6 PM. I was still in my jammies, too.

  5. It's true it really doesn't matter what the day is. It also doesn't matter if you give someone a present at Christmas or just when you're thinking about them. I guess people think about it more after all the food from Thanksgiving and Christmas and they are feeling yucky and want to make a change. Heck, what do I know. Every day is a new beginning. I resolve not to make any more resolutions :)

  7. I'm with you! I don't delay improving myself because it's not the right day or month yet. Now excuse me, but the Ninja movie on TV requires some extra attention (samurai sword fighting part).

  9. To quote Billy Joel, "Don't goooooo changin'!"

I totally agree: Why January 1? The school year is the real year for me. Jan. 1 is a halfway point. Who can really change anything when everything else stays the same until June?

I made a pact with myself once to get showered and dressed before noon. It was so overrated.

  10. I loved that little cartoon at the start of your post, SkippyMom!! LOL!! That's me as well - perfect in every way, so why do I need to change anything??!! LOL! I do agree with you though - what's so special about January the 1st for goodness sake. It's ridiculous really. Oh well, I must end there, otherwise I'll end up being a grumpy old woman! (Heaven forbid!!).

  11. Resolutions? What are these resolutions of which you speak?

Love, love, love the new background; what took you so long to find it? Hee.

  12. So at the beginning of November you posted on my Morten Harket blog (that hardly exists ...) asking me to email you. I just saw it and emailed you! Sorry!

  13. I guess people think: This year I want to get it right. It seems like a good idea. Fresh year. Fresh start. But I am like you. If you want a change, make it now - don't put it off until day X.

  14. I didn't choose Jan but I want to be sensitive to the needs of others and help whenever I can.

  15. No, we shouldn't put it off until Jan 1st... but if there are still things you want to improve on for the next year? I'm all for it.
I'm not perfect, and a new year is just a chance to leave the last behind and have a fresh start.

When they start having Christmas in February, and drop the ball in March- then I'll make my resolutions in March, it's a fine month lol.

  19. SO TRUE!

I acutally seem to start a new resolution every Monday.

So in other words my resolutions started yesterday.

I broke the "unnecessary sugar" goal by 4pm.

Good to catch up. It's nice to be back in the blogging world!

    Have a wonderful day.

  20. I had to laugh at Rudee's comment = that its okay if you cange your pajamas into a clean pair of pajamas - right on! :D

I am so low maintenance, in the winter I usually wear my pajamas to the store!

  21. Well Missy, I'll have you know my penchant for serial killing is more manageable in January because it's too cold out to slash any heads.
    ...just so you know... :P

  22. You always crack me up! I really make resolutions...but I think having some time off work gives me time to think about things that I might like to do differently. I have committed myself to a few small things...like wearing my hear down to work, and taking my lunch at least 4 days a week... Are commitments the same as resolutions? Lol
